Searching for a job or internship is basically a job in
itself. For the last few months I’ve been in search for a summer internship…and
from my experiences I have learned a few things. Some of these things are 1. patience
IS a virtue and 2. crying to your laptop
gets you nowhere.
Now that summer is right around the corner and I am still jobless, I have been starting to panic (understatement of the year). Over the weekend I spoke to a friend who was in the same position but instead of a summer internship, he was looking for a full time position. On a recent trip to NYC to do a few interviews, one of the professionals he was interviewing with told him one of the best analogies for a job search/ internship search that I have ever heard, and it made me feel a lot better about my situation. It goes along the lines of this:
“Picture marbles on a flat
table with a bunch of holes in the table. The holes are internships and jobs,
while we are the marbles. Some of the marbles may fall into holes right away,
while others may take awhile to find a hole. Either way, every marble will fall
through.”
It is all about timing and opportunity. If you are in a
similar position and looking for a summer job, internship, or full time
position keep your head up and do not get discouraged! The job market -
especially here in Boston, is super competitive and there are a lot of people
in search of the same position you are. Just remember to be patient, be
persistent and take advantage of any opportunity thrown your way. When one door
closes, another one opens – you just need to wait for someone to close the door
so you can go and open it….if that makes sense.
Don’t give up!
Don’t give up!
