Lilly Pulitzer, an icon when it comes to avante garde
preppy, passed away this morning in Palm Beach, FL. She was 81.
Lilly Pulitzer’s mother was an oil heiress, and for a period
of time she was married to the grandson of the publishing Pulitzer (hence the
name). The iconic brand, named after the woman herself, began as an orange juice
stand! Her husband owned orchards near their Palm Beach home. Lilly had her
dressmaker create bright shift dresses in prints that would hide any juice
stains (like the British red coats but way more fabulous), and a fashion
sensation was born! Jacqueline Kennedy, who attended boarding school with
Pulitzer was photographed in one of her shifts for a Life magazine photo spread
and the brand took off.
The signature Lilly color palette features outrageous jungle
and floral prints, in blues, pinks, light green, yellows and oranges. The line
of dresses soon expanded into swimsuits, country club attire, children’s
clothing, a home collection and accessories and a limited selection of
menswear.
When I think of Lilly Pulitzer I think of my years in Tri-Delta.
You could walk into any room in the house and see some type of Lilly print
whether it’s hanging in their closet, some décor on their coffee table, or some
fun piece of jewelry laid out on their desk. A few years ago Lilly P came up
with a line of sorority prints and from that day on, Greek Life became even
brighter!
